En el umbral de la secularización: últimos repertorios barrocos de imágenes y devociones, 1739-1851

Abstract

A partir de la bibliografía del carmelita Roque Alberto Faci (1684-1744), del cual destaca su conocida obra Aragón, reino de Cristo y dote de María Santísima, analizamos ocho libros devocionales que compendian cultos de santos, imágenes y santuarios españoles e internacionales, a partir de estudios históricos, cuentos, mitos, leyendas y costumbres populares con tintes prodigiosos. Estas obras, que popularizaron los dogmas cristianos mediante la representación de las virtudes y acontecimientos milagrosos, se enfrentaron a reticencias culturales cada vez mayores en la España del siglo XVIII. El discurso ilustrado empezaba a surgir en el mundo hispano, y con él, el rechazo a la herencia tridentina. Aun así, la producción editorial de este tipo de literatura siguió gozando de gran aceptación, sobre todo mediante obras como las del carmelita Faci, dedicadas al público seglar. Estos libros reflejaban las inquietudes y aspiraciones de la sociedad, sus ideas y creencias, e incluso el estado del catolicismo español del momento en la masa de sus creyentes
