Venerables mujeres. El retrato religioso femenino como elemento didáctico y adoctrinador en época barroca

Abstract

Tras la Reforma protestante, la Contrarreforma comenzará a mostrar modelos de personajes, vivos o recién fallecidos, que eran considerados héroes, lo que generó que junto a la difusión de los retratos también se divulgaran modelos de comportamiento, contribuyendo así a la proliferación de retratos religiosos con fines morales y propagandísticos. Destacando el retrato de mujeres venerables como elemento didáctico y adoctrinador que vinculado a los escritos: biografías, autobiografías o diarios, elaboran modelos de comportamiento femenino, tratando de expresar el modelo de santidad como una vía hacia la conversión. Las religiosas eran consideradas como modelos de virtud, ejemplos de conducta, que las mujeres de la época debían imitar, por lo que a menudo las niñas eran educadas en los conventos. Fuera de los conventos, la publicación de numerosos libros de moral cristiana pretendía aleccionar a las mujeres, además de las biografías de religiosas que daban a conocer sus vidas y virtudes, las cuales se veían reflejadas en sus retratos que se difundieron por medio de las estampas.
