[EN] Monasticism developed a great prosperity in Alexandria. It was revealed in the urban topography of the city and its neighborhood. Ascetic activity brought about construction and foundation of numerous dwelling places for ascetics and monks. From the fourth century A.D. there is evidence of urban communities, monasteries inside and outside the city, and individual dwelling places. They were increasing in number in the following centuries, and remained in existence until the Islamic conquest.
