The Heracleopolitan lake/s constitute a significant feature of the natural landscape, welling up from the phreatic surface, and of the cult topography, because of their incorporation into the temple of Heryshef. They held a central position in local religious beliefs and practices and gained early royal patronage. These factors facilitated that the theological speculation made a symbolic or mythic reading of them, which the 9th-10th dynasty would help to establish further in the traditions of the country
