Entre sultanes y leones: La ejecución de la pena capital por parte del sultán Mawlāy Ismāʿīl de Marruecos (1672-1727)

Abstract

Mawlāy Ismāʿīl (r. 1082-1139H./1672-1727), el segundo sultán de la dinastía alauí, es una figura histórica marcada por la controversia. Una suerte de «leyenda negra», forjada a través de una recepción muy negativa del recurso a la violencia por parte del sultán, es patente en dos tipos de fuentes bien diversas. Por un lado, en textos europeos de diferente naturaleza de los siglos XVII y XVIII –relaciones de cautivos, de redentores y de embajadores, principalmente–. Por otro, en relatos orales marroquíes registrados en los siglos XX y XXI, en los que a menudo se le presenta como el «sultán negro» (sultan al-khal), un epíteto también invocado en el caso de otros sultanes, especialmente de las dinastías almohade y meriní, que popularmente se le confiere a aquellos que gobiernan desplegando una enorme violencia sobre sus súbditos. En este trabajo centraremos nuestra atención en uno de los métodos de ejecución de la pena capital que varias fuentes europeas de los siglos XVII y XVIII le atribuyen al sultán Mawlāy Ismāʿīl: arrojar a un humano a los leones. ¿Qué lógicas (¿Penales?) se hallan detrás de este método de ejecución? ¿A qué usos de la justicia (¿Islámica? ¿No islámica?) responden los casos concretos que nos transmiten las fuentes?
