El arzobispo de Lima Jerónimo de Loayza (1543- 1575), entre el gobierno temporal y el gobierno espiritual

Abstract

La historiografía más reciente se ha centrado en la importancia del conocimiento y la circulación de información tanto en el gobierno del territorio, como en los asuntos eclesiásticos y civiles. Este tema adquiere una significativa importancia para la Monarquía Hispánica, porque en el régimen de Real Patronato, el soberano poseía tanto el gobierno temporal como el gobierno espiritual. Esta ponencia quiere reflexionar sobre las actividades informativas de la jerarquía eclesiástica, uno de los puntos del triángulo vigilante, en relación a las decisiones de gobierno en las reales cédulas y las ordenanzas. Particularmente, me centraré en el caso de la circulación de la información sobre el gobierno espiritual entre la diócesis de Lima, gobernada por Jerónimo de Loayza, y el Rey en el período 1543-1575. Los temas tratados son la evangelización de los indios, la organización de la Iglesia americana y los concilios provinciales, así como las relaciones entre el arzobispo y el virrey Toledo (1569-80) y su visita general. Este último asunto adquiere una importancia particular, ya que el arzobispo informa al monarca de las acciones del virrey y de sus personales consideraciones sobre ello.
