Abstract

La ambiciosa política exterior llevada a cabo por Carlos V provocó una gran necesidad de recursos que debían satisfacer sus diferentes territorios, y el Reino de Valencia, que durante este tiempo cada vez aportaba menos dinero en Cortes como consecuencia de su devaluación monetaria, no se quedaba atrás. Su Real Patrimonio necesitaba ajustarse a la nueva realidad, como habían hecho las otras principales instituciones regnícolas, así que, el emperador optó por recurrir a un mecanismo de control sujeto exclusivamente a su voluntad, como son las visitas. El elegido para llevarla a cabo fue Pedro de la Gasca, un inquisidor con estudios de jurisprudencia amparado por el influyente comendador mayor de León, Francisco de los Cobos. Al frente del Real Patrimonio valenciano se encontraba Lluís Carrós de Vilaragut y su hijo, pertenecientes a una de las familias más influyentes del reino y con estrechos vínculos con la Corte. La actuación del juez de residencia despertó la indignación del viejo Carrós en cuanto a la inspección de sus cuentas, produciéndose un conflicto donde tuvieron que mediar el príncipe y el propio emperador. Finalmente, tras la muerte del baile general y la marcha del visitador, el príncipe decidió seguir la estrategia de la Gasca e instaurar una especie de consejo llamado Junta Patrimonial, donde se debían tratar los asuntos más importantes referentes al Real Patrimonio, anteriormente atribución exclusiva del baile, en un intento de racionalizar su hacienda pública valenciana.
