Abstract

Los primeros pasos de la renovación cultural de tipo ilustrado, en lengua ' griega, se dan en las Islas Jónicas - el Heptaneso -, dependientes de Venecia, y en los Balcanes otomanos, concretamente en los principados danubianos y en el triángulo formado por Iánina, Salónica y las ciudades de la Macedonia noroccidental Iiasta Moscópolis', localidad que conocería una tiotoria importancia cultural durante casi todo el siglo XVIII. Todo ese espacio distaba mucho de una homogeneidad política. El Heptaneso estará bajo soberaiiia veneciana hasta la victoria napoleónica en 1797; los principados danubianos de Moldavia y Valaquia se hallaban bajo soberanía otomana limitada, pues su estratégica posición de enclave en medio de tres imperios hostiles entre sí, el otomano, el ruso y el de los Habsburgo, les permitía uii status autónomo otorgado por la Sublime Puerta que puso eii manos de la aristocracia griega del Fana? su administración interna. Eii cambio, las regiones del Epiro y de Macedonia occidental, eii el corazóii de los Balcanes, se encontraba11 bajo plena soberanía otomana. Esta ubicación, alejada del centro de poder religioso del Patriarcado ortodoxo y de poder politico de la Puerta, favoreció los contactos de dicho triángulo con Europa: Iánina y las Islas Jónicas se relacionaron con Venecia por la proximidad coi1 Italia y los víiiculos del Heptaiieso con la Serenisinia; Moldo-Valaquia y Macedonia, coi1 el mundo germáiiico centroeuropeo debido a su cercanía geográfica y por constituir una vía terrestre y fliivial para los intercambios coinerciales con Centroeuropa. Estos vínculos económicos, cuiturales y sociales crearon el tejido adecuado para la llegada y desarrollo de nuevas ideas en los Balcanes.
