Ecology of the blow flies of an eusynanthropic habitat near Buenos Aires (Diptera, Calliphoridae)

Abstract

[EN] A blow flies taxocoenosis from an eusynanthropic habitat located in the city of Avellaneda, Buenos Aires, Argentina, was studied. Monthly captures were carried on hourly from 10.30 am to 4,30 pm, during a whole year, from November 1986 to October 1987. Species were netted while lying on the bait composed by lung rotten beef which was exposed to flies colonization during 30 minutes. Shaded and sunny sites were sampled every hour simultaneously. Statistical analysis were done to estimate sex ratio, heliophyly of the studied populations, as well as correlations between seasonal changes in abundance and temperatura. Obtained results showed a low species richness, a prevalent occurrence of females in most species, and a high degree of heliophyly of the co-dominant species, Calliphora vicina, Chrysomya albiceps, and Chrysomya megacephala. Phaenicia sericata, a key species of the studied community, didn't show any preference either for shaded or for sunny places. Chrysomya rufifacies is recorded for the first time for Argentina.
