Comerciantes franceses en Sevilla: el papel de las mujeres en las compañías comerciales durante los siglos XVIII y XIX

Abstract

En el presente trabajo vamos a analizar el papel protagonista que un grupo de mujeres, pertenecientes todas a una misma familia, jugó en las distintas compañías comerciales a las que fueron dando lugar sus maridos. Durante generaciones, las mujeres de la familia tuvieron un papel destacado en la actividad comercial de sus negocios, fundamentalmente tras enviudar. Centraremos nuestra atención en la actividad mercantil que desempeñaron tres mujeres de esta familia, María Baylle, Teresa Elena Hermil y María Catalina Chaix, madre, hija y nieta respectivamente. Las tres se hicieron cargo de las sociedades que sus maridos tenían en el momento de su fallecimiento, dando continuidad a los negocios de éstos, y en otros casos, conformando nuevas compañías comerciales con otros miembros de la familia.
