La baronía de Castelnovo y don Alonso de Cardona y Borja. Las bases patrimoniales del marquesado (1621- 1642)

Abstract

Dentro de nuestro interés por estudiar la trayectoria vital y el ascenso social de don Alonso de Cardona y Borja (1600-1659), miembro de una de las más destacadas familias de la nobleza valenciana y primer marqués de Castelnovo, creemos fundamental prestar la atención necesaria a la importancia del patrimonio en su proceso de enoblecimiento. En este sentido, partimos del inesperado acceso de don Antonio de Cardona – padre de don Alonso- a la baronia de Castelnovo a raíz de la muerte sin descendencia de su prima Beatriz de Borja. Analizaremos, a continuación, los problemas a los que los Cardona tuvieron que enfrentarse para hacer efectivo su dominio sobre Castelnovo y las contrariedades que les supusieron la herencia endeudada con el duque de Gandia, así como el pleito judicial iniciado por los marqueses de Guadalest por la sucesión de Castelnovo. Nos adentraremos, finalmente, en las circunstancias que determinaron que don Antonio nombrara procurador a su hijo y que obligaron a don Alonso de Cardona a afrontar la gestión de dicha baronía, pero que también le permitieron consolidar su linaje como barones de Castellnou, asentando así las bases patrimoniales de su propio enoblecimiento.
