Abstract

El 19 de febrero de 2001 ocurrió un terremoto de Magnitud mb 2.6 (IGN) en el centro de Asturias. Las formas de onda de ese terremoto eran diferentes a las de los terremotos naturales conocidos en la región. El epicentro del terremoto calculado por el IGN (Instituto Geográfico Nacional), que no encajaba con ninguna estructura geológica activa, sin embargo, estaba muy próximo a dos de las más importantes minas de carbón que la empresa estatal HUNOSA (Hulleras del Norte, S.A.) tiene en Asturias, los pozos San Nicolás (Mieres) y Montsacro (Morcín-Riosa). Cabía la posibilidad de que ese evento pudiese ser un ejemplo de terremoto inducido por la actividad minera. Con objeto de profundizar en su origen se instaló una red sísmica temporal de detalle centrada en el epicentro calculado por el IGN y de radio unos 3 km. Durante un periodo de registro de un año se detectaron más de 300 pequeños eventos claramente diferenciados de la actividad minera diaria. Las características de algunos de esos eventos podrían confirmar la presencia de un foco de sismicidad inducida por las minas de esa comarca que explicaría el terremoto de 2001.
