Abstract

Aranjuez debe al Tajo la riqueza y vigor de su vegetación en su vega y jardines. En contraposición, ambos ríos, con sus desbordamientos han traido al Sitio serios problemas: sus huertas se anegaban de agua con pérdidas cuantiosas o totales de las cosechas; sus jardines quedaban inundados, en especial el de la Isla, y sus calles y puentes eran barridos por la fuerza del agua originándose la incomunicación o desaparición de los accesos al Sitio. Como coiisecuencia de estas trágicas situaciones que originaban las lluvias y crecidas del caudal de los ríos los arquitectos e ingenieros hidráulicos van a ser artífices imprescindibles en Aranjuez. Hoy, al número de ellos, queremos añadir la del arquitecto italiano Santiago Bonavía al conocer sus proyectos, cooperación e ideas en este aspecto y al servicio del Real Sitio de Aranjuez y de los monarcas Felipe V y Fernando VI. El mismo Bonavía nos infonna haber "desempeñado las obras que en todos los Sitios Reales se han puesto a su cuidado, tanto de Pintura, teatros y fábricas ..." ', en este caso la palabra "fábrica" nos parece indicar ya parte del aspecto que hoy exponemos.
