La doctrina social de la Iglesia: Hacia una nueva síntesis

Abstract

Lo primero necesario es tener una noción clara de lo que llamamos doctrina social: se trata de la respuesta doctrinal de la Iglesia en general y del Magisterio en particular a las doctrinas con las que en el siglo XIX y el XX se ha intentado abordar los cambios sociales y económicos que se han registrado en ese tiempo. La definición que acabamos de proponer puede parecer clara y suficiente, pero no lo es. ¿A qué cambios sociales y económicos se refiere? Fundamentalmente, a los que dieron lugar al auge del socialismo en sus más diversas formas. ¿Y es lo mismo hablar de respuesta doctrinal de la Iglesia en general y del Magisterio en particular? No. La respuesta de la Iglesia comenzó sobre todo en los años cuarenta del siglo XIX en tanto que el Magisterio pontificio no se pronunció hasta la publicación de la Rerum novarum del papa León XIII en 1891 (aunque, en rigor, la condena del socialismo y del comunismo, con estos nombres, ya aparece en la encíclica Notis et nobiscum, de Pío IX, en 1849). Hay que advertir que, en aquellos tiempos, se solía entender por comunismo lo que hoy se llama socialismo y, por socialismo, lo que hoy se llama anarquismo.
