Perspectivas futuras en el control de plagas agrícolas

Abstract

Sin duda, existe una serie de incertidumbres sobre las estrategias actuales y de futuro para el control eficaz de las plagas agrícolas, tanto en España como en toda la Unión Europea. Por un lado, se ha avanzado de manera muy notoria en cuanto a las diferentes tácticas y tecnologías disponibles para el control de plagas. Hoy en día existen nuevos métodos de control mas dirigidos hacia el control selectivo de las plagas a la vez que se dispone de mayor información sobre como y cuando combatir las plagas. Pero por otro lado, la necesidad de obtener alimentos con precios de mercado competitivos implica una reducción en los gastos de producción. Esto no siempre es posible puesto que los métodos de control tecnológicamente más sofisticados suelen ser más caros de producir. Este es el caso de los métodos de control biológico basados en la producción y suelta masiva de enemigos naturales que en general son caros y difíciles de manejar (requieren mayor mano de obra, personal especializado para su aplicación y no pueden ser almacenados por mucho tiempo). Todo ello supone un incremento del coste real de producción y aplicación especialmente si se compara con los costes del control químico tradicional. Por otro lado, la sociedad actual demanda alimentos cada vez mas seguros y con menor cantidad de residuos químicos, lo que obliga a fomentar métodos alternativos de control no contaminantes y que además estén bien vistos por los consumidores.
