Abstract

[EN] This review presents the results the of a phytochemical and pharmacological study of the plant Croton micans Sw. Chemical investigation of organic extracts obtained from Croton micans flowers, leaves and stems, led to isolation and identification of 18 compounds, seven of them reported for the first time in natural products literature: two 3,4-secoent- kaurene diterpenes, five 3,4-seco-ent-kaurene dimers, three ent-kaurenes, three steroids with triterpene skeletons, two sesquiterpenes, a monoterpene, a long chain acid and a flavonoid. Composition of essential oil obtained from flowers and leaves was also identified, fenchil acetate being the major compound. Pharmacological evaluation allowed determining toxic effects of Croton micans aqueous extract on experimental animals and the TD50, were determined. In addition, the effects on guinea pig ileal smooth muscle, cardiovascular response, and analgesic and antihistamine activity were also determined. Cytotoxic activity of organic extracts and isolated metabolites on human tumor cells are also shown.
