El olivo ha sido, junto a la vid y al cereal, una constante en la cultura mediterránea. venerado, cultivado y expandido desde la más remota antigüedad por toda la cuenca del Mare Nostrum, egipcios, hebreos, fenicios, cretenses y griegos lo consideraban como árbol sagrado y símbolo de la sabiduría. También de la paz y de la gloria y se le identificaba con la vida y con la eternidad debido a su extraordinaria longevidad.
