Les cianoficies, dins el món viu, tenen una posició molt peculiar, puix que, per la seva estructura procariota, produir toxines, alliberar al medi composts organics -àdhuc la vitamina B12-, la capacitat d'infecció pels virus anomenats cianòfags (PAVAN, 1969; SHILO, 1971; SAFFERMAN, 1972), fa que tinguin fortes semblances amb els bacteris.
