Abstract

El langostino, Penaeus kerathurus (Forskäl 1775) es uno de los crustáceos más apreciados en el mercado nacional por sus cualidades nutritivas y finura de su carne. La especie por las costas españolas y la producción anual nacional casi alcanza la cifra de los ochenta millones de pesetas. La región Tramontana ooupa el segundo lugar en lo que a peso desembarcado se refiere. Siendo abundante en aquellas áreas marinas poco profundas, cercanas a ríos, con fondos blandos y en cuyas proximidades existen zonas salobres más o menos pantanosas y en comunicación con el mar, es natural que en los puertos de Vinaroz (Castellón) y San Carlos de la Rápita (Tarragona) sea donde mayores desembarcos se realizan de toda la región Tramontana, ya que la zona reúne las condiciones ecológicas anteriormente citadas. En nuestro país y hasta el momento, no se había realizado ningún estudio sobre la biología del langostino, que sirviera de base a posteriores investigaciones. En febrero de 1963, la Dirección General de Pesca Marítima haciéndose eco de la necesidad de estudiar en detalle la biología de esta importante especie, aprobó un presupuesto anexo al del Plan Experimental de Pesca de Arrastre que haría posible el estudio de la biología del langostino, con el fin de establecer las medidas necesarias para su protección y explotación racional.
