Abstract

[EN] As social constructs of iconicity, be they sign or symbol, images make sense and correspond to different social functions. The conditions under which they are created and used are elaborated in a specifi c social and cultural context, but their development should also be considered according to space and time. In the case of those cultures where little literature has been transmitted, and was indirectly transmitted only, images stand as a particularly important source of information for historians. Such is the case of the culture of the Iberian peoples, as it developed between the Vth and the Ist century BC in the East and the South of the Iberian peninsula and in Southeast France. The Iberians were a mix of peoples who had cultural traits in common, and whose origins and evolution were highly dependent on their connections with the rest of the Mediterranean area. This article takes stock of the recent contributions made by researchers on Iberian images, and does so according to three main topics : nature, identity and social changes. It looks ahead to the future perspectives of a discipline that has been in full bloom for the past few years.
