Abstract

El afloramiento o "upwelling" consiste en corrientes ascendentes, procedentes de profundidades de hasta 200 metros. En el hemisferio Norte los vientos favorables al afloramiento son los que soplan paralelos a la costa y en una dirección tal que la costa quede a la izquierda de un observador que mira en la dirección del viento. Un oceanógrafo japonés, trabajando en California, mide la intensidad del afloramiento por el transporte vertical de una unidad de volumen de agua en la unidad tiempo. Las áreas de afloramiento se reconocen porque en ellas las aguas reúnen las siguientes condiciones; baja temperatura, alta salinidad y contenido en oxígeno relativanente bajo. Las aguas que afloran en, superficie conducen sales nutritivas que sirven de base a las floraciones de fitoplancton, base, a su vez, de la proliferación del zooplancton. La cantidad de alimento puede ser decisiva en la supervivencia de las clases anuales de peces. En Castellón los vientos que favorecen el afloramiento son los del tercer cuadrante. Las temperaturas inferiores a las normales se dan en las épocas en que los vientos son favorables al afloramiento. [...]
