Los principales efectos de la explotación sobre el volúmen de una población natural de peces son: desaparición de los individuos de más edad, disminución de la talla, cambio en la proporción de las diversas especies, consecuencias de la eliminación de los depredadores sobre el crecimiento de la población, descenso en la distribución espacial y en la abundancia de jóvenes y disminución del redimiento por unidad de esfuerzo.
