[EN] This article studies the beginnings and development of the Monterrey (Galicia, Spain) village and fortress during the Middle Age, and pays special attention to its role as a defensive town, since it was both near the Portuguese border and on the road to Castile. It also analyzes the legal situation of the lands surrounding the village, as well as the foundation of the shire in the fourteenth century and the lords who successively ruled that land on behalf of the king. There is also a study of the quarrels that arose during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries between the different noble houses who wanted to rule the shire.

[ES] El artículo estudia los orígenes y el desarrollo de la villa y la fortaleza de Monterrey (Galicia, España) en la Edad Media, con una especial atención hacia su papel defensivo en las proximidades de la frontera con Portugal y en la vía de comunicación con Castilla. Se analiza la evolución de la condición jurídica del territorio circundante, la formación del señorío en el siglo XIV y de los sucesivos señores que ejercieron el poder en nombre del rey. También se estudian los abundantes litigios que se produjeron desde comienzos del siglo XV entre los diferentes linajes que se disputaron su señorío.
