Mejora de la adaptación en sistemas de cultivo asociado

Abstract

Se denominan cultivos asociados o múltiples los que se desarrollan simultánemente en el mismo lugar y tiempo, coincidiendo, durante la mayor parte de su ciclo, dos especies vegetales distintas. Según el Instituto Nacional de Estadística (1997) no se consideran cultivos asociados, sino cultivo único, las mezclas de cultivos o cultivos mixtos cuyos productos no se recogen por separado, como los cereales mezclados. Pueden asociarse cultivos herbáceos, cultivos leñosos o herbáceos con leñosos. De hecho, las principales asociaciones inventariadas por el INE son: cítricos-cítricos, viñedo-herbáceo, viñedo-olivar, viñedo-frutales, olivar-herbáceos, olivar-frutales, frutales-herbáceos, frutales-frutales, maíz-judías, otros herbáceos con herbáceos y cultivos agrícolas-especies forestales. Entre las ventajas del cultivo asociado puede citarse un aprovechamiento mejor de los recursos, los beneficios mutuos y la barrera a la diseminación de plagas y enfermedades (Mateeva et al., 2002; Okigbo y Greenland, 1975). Adicionalmente, Flores (1993), cita diferentes aspectos positivos del cultivo asociado para unas prácticas orgánicas dentro de la agricultura y la horticultura, referidos a la protección frente a plagas.
