Qualsevol comunitat natural -un bosc, un plancton- és forniada per un conjunt d'individus que es poden distribuir entre un cert nombre d'especies. Una descripció simplificada de la comunitat pot consistir en una Ilista d'especies amb expressió qnantitativa de I'abundancia o densitat de població de cadascuna d'elles. Aquestes llistes constitueixen el material basic per a atacar alguns objectius de l'estudi ecologic; el reconeixement de tipus de comunitats, i la definició de grups d'espècies indicadores de determinades propietats de l'ambient.
