[ES] En este trabajo se establece una relación dialéctica entre lo que ocurrió en los años 1868-1898 en la Península y en Filipinas. A través del análisis del papel de las órdenes religiosas dentro de la Administra ción de Filipinas, se refleja la compleja relación de colaboración y con flicto mantenida entre el Estado, las autoridades coloniales, los frailes y la población filipina en las últimas décadas del siglo xix. Se revela, así, una tensa lucha por el poder, la influencia y el control en las islas y una dura pugna entre reformistas y antirreformistas, procesos en los cuales los frailes tuvieron un protagonismo destacado.

[EN] This paper set a dialectical relationship between what happened in the Peninsula and in the Philippines during the years 1868-1898. Through the analysis of the role of religious orders within the Admin istration of the Philippines, it reflects the complex relationship of colaboration and conflict maintained between the State, the colonial au thorities, the friars and the Filipino population, in the last decades of the nineteenth century. It thus reveals the fight for power, influence and control in the islands and the struggle between reformists and antireformists, processes in which the friars had a central role.
