Abstract

[ES] Actualmente, la determinación cuantitativa del fitoplancton por medio de la extracción y valoración de sus pigmentos está bastante difundida en oceanografía biológica, y se practica corrientemente en varios laboratorios españoles. Sin embargo, los problemas que el método plantea no están totalmente resueltos, ni en el aspecto técnico ni en la interpretación de los resultados obtenidos. Este artículo pretende ser informativo y crítico, especialmente a la luz de los primeros resultados de una serie de cultivos unialgales destinados a esclarecer ciertos aspectos del tema (cálculo de la relación entre cantidad de pigmento y peso seco), que revelaron complicaciones, en parte nuevas para la ciencia (efectos de la temperatura), del mayor interés teórico general. Estos hallazgos, además de sugerir nuevos caminos de investigación, invitan a reflexionar sobre el verdadero significado de los números que obtenemos al aplicar este método. [...]
