Abstract

[ES] Las relaciones entre temperatura y forma y dimensiones de los organismos se dejan apreciar en un grado muy diverso según sea el campo habitual de trabajo del naturalista. Quizás el hidrobiólogo es el que las percibe de manera más impresionante. De todas formas, al repasar la bibliografía científica se echa de menos un tratamiento adecuado del tema, menguado interés que no guarda ciertamente relación con la importancia del mismo. Los resúmenes publicados, principalmente en obras de ecología (cf. Chapman, 1931; Hesse & al., 1937 ; Belehradek, 1935 ; Allee & al., 1949 ; Tischler, 1949), resultan incompletos y no llegan a generalizaciones adecuadas para ser utilizadas corrientemente en los problemas que plantean la taxonomía, la ecología y la evolución. El examen de la cuestión que se intenta en las siguientes páginas es parcial, pues está guiado por el interés del que se dedica a la ecología, que no coincide con el del fisiólogo. Queda sobrentendido, por tanto, que sólo se tratará de las relaciones entre temperatura y dimensiones y forma, buscando su significado en el campo de la evolución, dejando aparte el análisis de las alteraciones de los distintos procesos fisiológicos —que están precisamente en la base de aquellos cambios morfológicos- bajo distintas temperaturas, sobre los que se ha acumulado una literatura considerable. Evidence reviewed in chapter 2 shows that smaller individuals are selected under a higher temperature. Characters related to size through allometry or other organic correlations, including clutch size in a variety of animals, show a similar dependence of temperature. [...]
