La información que se ha publicado sobre la ecología del fitoplancton del área de Margarita es muy limitada Curl (1960) presenta varias determinaciones de productividad, Hulburt (1963) examina cuantitativamente una serie de muestras de plancton obtenidas en la región (densidades de 4 a 244 células o colonias por ml. con Nitzschia delicatissima, Cocolithus buxleyt y un Caetoceros como dominantes) y Hart (1959) menciona incidentalmente la presencia de Oscillatorta (Trichodesmium) theiebautu cerca de Margarita.
