Estrategias defensivas y compromisos entre caracteres de historia vital en pinos

Abstract

Como cualquier otro organismo sobre la Tierra, los pinos deben ajustar con sumo cuidado la adjudicación de recursos a crecimiento, reproducción y defensa en cada circunstancia ambiental. En organismos como los pinos, de gran tamaño, reproducción retrasada y vida larga, el balance entre funciones debe reajustarse de forma dinámica, pues el balance entre costes y beneficios podría depender de las condiciones ambientales, como la disponibilidad de recursos o el ataque por plagas o patógenos. Como los recursos son limitados y no puede maximizarse la inversión en dos funciones de forma simultánea, podrían existir conflictos en la adjudicación de recursos entre funciones. Estos compromisos podrían reflejarse en correlaciones negativas entre caracteres a nivel individual, e incluso entre familias, procedencias o especies. En diversos trabajos de campo e invernadero hemos estudiado estos compromisos entre estrategias defensivas y crecimiento, y hemos comprobado que estas predicciones teóricas se cumplen en pinos. En particular hemos encontrado compromisos entre estrategias defensivas y entre resistencia y crecimiento entre familias, procedencias y especies, y que dichas correlaciones negativas dependen del contexto ambiental, en particular de la disponibilidad de nutrientes. La existencia de correlaciones negativas entre pares de caracteres debe ser considerada en las estrategias de mejora y gestión de recursos genéticos forestales en condiciones ambientales cambiantes como las actuales.
