Se puede afirmar que el presente libro de Margalef, publicado originalmente en lengua inglesa hace diez años, supuso para la Ecología una aportación destacada. Las esis que contiene son una elaboración de La Teoría de la Información en Ecología (1957) y de On certain unifying principles in ecology (1963), del porpio autor; éste ha escrito "Estos trabajos promovieron alguna polémica y diversos puntos de vista presentados en los mismos han sido aceptados y han tenido cierta influencia en la Ecología actual".
