Abstract

[EN] Slavery, seen not as a production system but rather as the socioeconomic presence and use of the workforce of slaves, is a structural institution that also had a great impact in the medieval era. This was particularly so in the Christian Western Mediterranean but also in the Mamluk Empire. However, although it is generally considered to be an almost irrelevant precedent to the Atlantic slave trade, it is increasingly clear that medieval slavery is the direct precedent, the field of experimentation and starting point of the first Atlantic slavers. This article outlines some of the key points for understanding the topic.
