Fuentes de resistencia a la acumulación de fumonisinas en el grano de maíz y estudio de la herencia de dicha resistencia

Abstract

Fusarium verticillioides es el hongo que con más frecuencia se encuentra infectando el grano de maíz en España y plantea un importante problema de seguridad alimentaria porque la mayoría de sus aislados son productores de fumonisinas (Santiago et al., 2015). Éstas son un tipo de micotoxinas que causan diversas enfermedades en el ganado y, en humanos, podrían ser factores de riesgo en el cáncer de esófago y causar defectos en el tubo neural (Voss el al., 2007). Por lo tanto. en muchas partes del mundo se ha implementado legislación para limitar su cantidad en alimentos y piensos: la Unión Europea ha establecido contenidos máximos permitidos para el maíz destinado a la alimentación humana (1126/2007/EC, 2007) y recomendaciones para el destinado a Ia alimentación animal (576/2006 /EC, 2006). La mejora genética es uno de los métodos más eficaces y ambientalmente seguros para reducir los niveles ele fumonisinas en el maíz y para diseñar el programa de mejora más adecuado es necesario: 1) detectar fuentes de resistencia adaptadas a la región en la que se cultivarán las variedades mejoradas y 2) estudiar la herencia de dicha resistencia.
