Abstract

[EN]: Mental health diseases are a big problem in our society: over 300 million people suffer from depression, an increase of 20% in 10 years. Mental illnesses are the main cause of disability. Moreover, the comorbidity between depression and medical illnesses is very frequent. Indeed, this association is bidirectional: the depression could be the cause or the consequence. The treatment of depression in the adult should be comprehensive and individualized according to the clinical findings and other factors, including health reports, availability of treatments, patient´s preference and family and institutional support. Management of depression should include coordination with all professionals involved in the manegement of depressive patients. A better understanding of what depression consists of and how it can prevent it and treat it, may help to reduce the stigmatization associated with patients depressed and would increase the number of people asking for help.
