Esquizofrenia: fármacos antipsicóticos y síndrome metabólico

Abstract

[EN]: Schizophrenia is a complex mental illness that, throughout history, has been defined in many different ways, and in which genetic predisposition appears to have a special relevance. It is a disease of low prevalence, but is very disabling and schizophrenic patients can receive very different treatments. Regarding pharmacological treatments, antipsychotic agents have shown to produce a marked improvement in the evolution and prognosis of the disease. However, they have a number of side effects, being the metabolic syndrome one of the most serious from the clinical point of view. Indeed, one of the major complications presented is the insulin resistance and therefore, the high risk of diabetes mellitus. The role of the nursing staff, and also other members of the health team, is to instruct the patient in healthy habits to reduce the risk of overweight, insulin resistance and hypertension, and therefore developing cardiovascular disease or diabetes.
