Esta especie fue descrita por Scopoli como Pctpilio fagi en 1763 (Ent. Carn., pág. 152, n.° 428) del Tirol meridional y Carintia, en Austria. Durante muchos años se la conoció bajo la denominación de Papilio hermione L., 1764 (Mus. Lud. Ulr., pág. 281, n.° 99), nombre que debe reservarse para la subespecie alemana de fagi. Hemming la situó en 1943, junto con alcyone Schiff., 1775, dentro del género Hipparchia E., 1807 (in Illiger, Mag. f. Insektenk., t. VI, pág. 781).
