Viabilidad de las semillas del género Brassica

Abstract

[EN] A collection of Brassica seeds are maintained in a seedbank at the Misión Biológica de Galicia at 4°C temperature and 60% of moisture content since 1985. The objective of this work was to study the seed germination after 10-13 years of conservation. Seed viability was determined by a standard germination test. Seeds were considered capable of producing normal seedlings if the cotyledons and radicle were visible. After 10- 13 years of storage, most seeds were still viable and showed, in general, acceptable germination percentages. Only a low number of accessions began to deteriorate after this storage period and did not germinate. The results obtained support that Brassica seeds have been preserved in good conditions for medium-term maintenance and these varieties can be used in breeding programs.
