Abstract

[EN] Congenital anomalies are an heterogeneous group of lesions characterized by morphological changes already present at birth. In small ruminants, a large number of malformations have been described by there is scarcity of studies that jointly examine its frequency of presentation. In this work, a retrospective revision of cases showing congenital anomalies found in the Pathology Diagnostic Service of the University of León, between 2001 and 2016, when 2437 small ruminant cases were examined, has been carried out. %e most commonly found malformations were seen in the central nervous system: cerebellar hypoplasia and hydranencephaly, related in some animals with pestivirus infection, or lyssencephaly, associated a deficiency in reelin protein. Arthrogriposis was also a common finding –related to pestivirus in some cases- together with spinal cord anomalies, microcephaly, acephaly, bicephaly, cleft palate or brachygnatia inferior. In the skin, cases of bullous epidermolysis have been recorded, and the defective proteins identified. In visceral organs, the highest number of anomalies occurred in the heart, particularly ventricular septal defects, usually related to clinical signs. Other malformations, in sporadic cases, were congenital hepatic fibrosis, urinary tract atresia, diaphragmatic hernia or fetal monsters.
