La pesca con artes de cerco, encaminada a la captura de especies pelágicas, especialmente sardina y boquerón, es una modalidad muy extendida en todas las costas españolas. En el Mediterráneo, este arte de pesca se complementa con el uso de focos luminosos, cuya finalidad es la de atraer, concentrar y mantener estabilizados los bancos de peces mientras se realiza la operación de cercado de los mismos.
