La industria pesquera española se encuentra entre las de los seis primeros países, presentando, por diversas razones, unas características especiales, ya que en las capturas se incluyen especies que tradicionalmente no han sido a preciadas por otros países. Tal es el caso de la merluza, apenas conocida en los mercados de Noruega, Reino Unido o Canadá, y el de los cefalópodos, profundamente despreciados por la mayoría de países occidentales.
