El problema de los vertimientos de residuos industriales

Abstract

En nuestros días no se concibe el probreso económico de un país si no es a través de un fuerte desarrollo industrial. Pero frecuentemente se presta poca atención a los trastornos de diversa índole (sociales, económicos y biológicos) que los vertimientos residuales puedan ocasionar, por lo que más tarde se crean conflictos de difícil solución. Los productos de desecho de las industrias instaladas en la proximidad del mar y en la costa, especialmente en ensenadas y bahías de circulación limitada, constituyen un serio peligro para el normal desarrollo de las especies sedentarias o de hábitos costeros, con lo que muchos recursos naturales de primer orden pueden verse seriamente amenazados y acabar incluso por desaparecer. Aunque es cierto que existen procedimientos muy eficaces para la recuperación de residuos, no lo es menos que en ocasiones el tratamiento puede resultar antieconómico, cabe que se ocasionen averías, roturas de tuberías, rebasamiento de tanques de decantación y, lo que es todavía más peligroso, bajo el punto de vista de la conservación de los recursos naturales las sustancias tóxicas de los afluentes industriales son, a veces, muy difíciles de valorar, porque pueden presentarse en concentraciones tan bajas que están en el umbral de sensibilidad de los métodos químicos.
