La fundamentación del Principio Cosmológico: perspectiva histórica

Abstract

La Cosmología es la disciplina que estudia el origen, la evolución y el destino del cosmos. No es hasta principios del siglo XX cuando se desarrolla como ciencia debido a una serie de acontecimientos: tanto fenómenos observacionales de objetos extremadamente distantes como desarrollos teóricos -con la teoría General de la Relatividad de Albert Einstein como punto de partida- y, como es natural, las discusiones que todos ellos suscitan. Contenido en la propuesta de Einstein de 1916, el Principio Cosmológico establece que a gran escala (del orden de cientos megapársecs) el universo es homogéneo e isótropo. Una de las observaciones cruciales que legitimaron este principio fue la detección del fondo cósmico de microondas, que tuvo lugar en 1964 por los radioastrónomos Arno Penzias y Robert Wilson de forma fortuita. De este modelo se deduce que la Tierra no está ubicada en un lugar privilegiado del cosmos dado que las propiedades del universo son las mismas para todos los observadores y en todas direcciones, idea que cristaliza en profundas implicaciones filosóficas y que genera un apasionado debate a lo largo del siglo XX. La presente comunicación pretende dar sentido a la formulación de este principio, prestando atención al descubrimiento de los fenómenos que lo sustentan así como a las críticas que despierta, y proporcionar un marco a las discusiones que se generan entre los científicos a lo largo del tiempo para dar forma a la concepción actual de nuestro lugar en el cosmos. De forma ilustrativa, también se exponen las ideas predecesoras de carácter especulativo propuestas por Isaac Newton e Immanuel Kant.
