Abstract

L’any 1976 els mitjans de comunicació es van fer ressò d’unes intoxicacions degudes al consum de musclos en conserva procedents de Galícia. No es tractava de les típiques intoxicacions alimentàries degudes a contaminació bacteriana, ja que els malalts presentaven símptomes neurotòxics. Encara que no s’havien vist canvis de color de l’aigua o altres senyals, aviat les sospites van recaure en una possible «purga de mar». Aquest era un dels noms donats a episodis en què les aigües del mar apareixien acolorades, a causa de l’abundància d’algues microscòpiques (o microalgues, per simplificar) del fitoplàncton. En anglès es parla de red tides (traduït en català per ‘marees roges’), malgrat que el color pot variar i no és generalment rogenc sinó més aviat marronós. [...]
