Abstract

Los espacios protegidos (EPs) no pueden considerarse como elementos aislados de los grupos humanos que los integran. La consideración del componente social es fundamental para garantizar el éxito de cualquier modelo de gestión. En este sentido, analizar las percepciones que las personas que viven en EPs tienen sobre ellos, puede ser una herramienta clave para la evaluación de estrategias y la formulación de propuestas para la mejora de los modelos de gestión de estos territorios. Este trabajo presenta los resultados del primer análisis de percepción de la población que habita el Espacio Natural Sierra Nevada (ENSN) que se realiza desde su declaración en 1989. Los resultados ponen de manifiesto que un modelo de gestión reconocido internacionalmente por su excelencia y una correcta estrategia de conservación ambiental no siempre van acompañados de una opinión favorable de las comunidades locales. Además se ha comprobado que el nivel de información y participación de la población son factores determinantes a la hora de desarrollar una percepción y una actitud positiva hacia el espacio protegido. Por tanto, los esfuerzos futuros deben concentrarse en la revisión de las estrategias de comunicación y las herramientas de participación que plantean los actuales modelos de gestión de los EPs, para conseguir, de una vez por todas, que la población local no identifique el espacio protegido como un freno al desarrollo, sino que perciba todos sus beneficios convirtiéndose en el principal actor de la conservación in situ.

Protected areas cannot be considered as elements isolated from the human groups that inhabit them. Consideration of the social factor is fundamental to guarantee the success of any management model. In this sense, analyzing the perception of persons who live in protected areas can be a key tool for the formulation of proposals for improving the existing models. This study presents the results of the first analysis of the perception of the population that inhabits the Sierra Nevada protected area that is realized since its declaration in 1989. The results show that a management model recognized internationally for its excellence and a correct environmental conservation strategy are not always accompanied by a favorable opinion of local communities. In addition, it has been verified that the level of information and participation of the population are key factors in the development of a perception and a positive attitude towards the protected space. Therefore, future efforts should focus on reviewing the communication strategies and participation tools posed by current models of management of protected areas, so that, once and for all, the local population does not identify the protected area as a brake on development, but perceive all its benefits becoming the main actor of conservation in situ.
