Abstract

Las leguminosas son un componente imprescindible en las rotaciones de cultivo dentro de una agricultura sostenible, al mejorar la fertilidad de los suelos gracias a la simbiosis con bacterias fijadoras de nitrógeno (Ramírez-Bahena, Peix, Velázquez y Bedmar, en este número). Además son una valiosa fuente de proteína vegetal, tanto para alimentación animal como humana, siendo componentes clave de la dieta mediterránea y de la de otras culturas como la hindú, con un papel creciente en alimentación animal tanto incluidas en las formulaciones de piensos como en pastos y forrajes para producción de carne y leche de alta calidad. Las legumbres también están ganando importancia por sus beneficios para la salud, puesto que proporcionan compuestos nutritivos y bioactivos de relevancia en la prevención de enfermedades. No obstante, y a pesar la larga tradición de cultivo y consumo en España y de todos estos bien conocidos beneficios, el cultivo de leguminosas ha disminuido constantemente en los últimos 50 años, siendo reemplazadas por otros cultivos que se han adaptado mejor a los avances tecnológicos y resultan más rentables al agricultor (González-Bernal y Rubiales). La rápida transformación de los sistemas agrarios durante las últimas décadas ha causado el abandono de especies menores y variedades tradicionales. Afortunadamente los bancos de germoplasma conservan una representación de esta diversidad, evitando así su desaparición definitiva y facilitando su utilización en el presente y en el futuro (De la Rosa y Fajardo Vizcaíno).
