Últimamente, se está dedicando gran atención al estudio de los peces mesopelágicos, en especial a los mictófidos y gonostomátidos, dado su indiscutible dominancia y elevada tasa de reproducción y desarrollo, hace que sean de gran interés como posible fuente de recursos, o bien por el importante papel que juegan en la cadena trófica.
