Esta mariposa que he bautizado con el nombre vulgar de "El zegrí", tomado del género latino creado para clasificarla, fue dada a conocer por Esper el año 1800, con ejemplares del Sur de Rusia. Rambur, en 1835, la descubrió para España en los alrededores de Málaga y Granada, aunque tal vez la encontrara antes el famoso naturalista español don Ignacio jordán de Asso, en el oscense monte Uruel, ya que bajo el número 10 de la lista de lepidópteros contenida en su "Introductio in Oryctographiam et Zoologiam Aragoniae", publicado en 1784, describió una innominada especie que podría ser la eupheme.
