La música en Hispanoamérica (1808-1814): sonidos de un mundo en vísperas de su independencia

Abstract

La ocupación de la España peninsular por las tropas napoleónicas coincidió con importantes tensiones emancipadoras en América que hicieron tambalear el imperio colonial español. Un arma tan poderosa como la música fue fundamental en ese contexto y se utilizó en Hispanoamérica tanto para apoyar al bando español o al francés como para alentar los incipientes movimientos independentistas. En la situación descrita, la música patriótica, de uno u otro signo ideológico, sonaba en todas partes, tanto en la España peninsular como en territorio americano: el pueblo llano la cantaba en calles y tabernas, los militares la incluían en sus actos castrenses, las clases acomodadas le daban cabida en las veladas de salones y casas particulares, y el público de los teatros acostumbraba a corear los estribillos de piezas patrióticas in cluidas en las representaciones. Los textos de canciones revolucionarias e himnos patrióticos, manuscritos o impresos, se difundían en hojas sueltas, en periódicos, como parte de otras publicaciones o en colecciones. La música de estas piezas patrióticas se publicaba o anotaba sólo en contadas ocasiones, ya que muchas melodías empleadas eran populares, circulaban oralmente y se iban adaptando a diversas letras, a veces con significados políticos opuestos. Esto explica que se hayan localizado todavía pocas partituras de este repertorio, aunque de él quedan en cambio muchos textos literarios. Además de la música patriótica, otros géneros tuvieron también notable importancia en territorio americano. Las catedrales y teatros siguieron funcionando con estructuras heredadas de la etapa colonial y sus repertorios fueron renovados paulatinamente. Como en Europa occidental, también en Latinoamérica creció la importancia de la música de salón y se desarrollaron orquestas y bandas.
