La metamórfosis de los insectos

Authors: Bellés, Xavier;

La metamórfosis de los insectos

Abstract

[EN] Metamorphosis is the process by which the young individual radically changes its form as it becomes an adult. But how does a caterpillar turn into a butterfly? Metamorphosis is a crucial innovation in the history of insects, and this book provides a detailed description of how scientists have managed to reconstruct the origin and evolution of this process. It starts with an account of the earliest observations in the Renaissance, the developments in the early 19th century, culminating in the 20th century with the discovery that metamorphosis is regulated by hormones, and ends with the latest research beginning to reveal the mechanisms by which these hormones act.
