Abstract

Con la aparición del bajo continuo y la progresiva mayor presencia "explicita" de instrumentos para reforzar la polifonía desde comienzos del siglo XVII, la manera de anotar la música hubo de buscar nuevas formas, más sencillas y prácticas, de transmisión. Si la disposición "de atril", había quedado más o menos establecida en etapas anteriores, las nuevas prácticas musicales exigían otros modos de anotar la música, que arrojaron una gran casuística. Es conocida ya la práctica de anotar las partes correspondientes al bajo continuo separadas del libro cantoral, al que podían adjuntarse, o no. Pero las nuevas necesidades no aparejaron en el ámbito hispánico, como hubiera parecido lo más normal, la copia mayoritaria de este nuevo tipo de música en disposición de partitura (es decir, colocando unas voces encima de otras, como en la actualidad), sino que se prefirió la copia musical en hojas sueltas ("Stimmblatter") para cada parte vocal o instrumental. Así al menos, "a papeles", se copió la inmensa mayoría de la música hispánica -incluida Iberoamérica- del siglo XVII. A pesar de ello, las excepcionales obras teóricas impresas de los tratadistas musicales hispanos de la época nos ofrecen muchos de sus ejemplos musicales dispuestos en partitura (es decir, colocando unas voces sobre otras) y con barras de compás. En cambio, estas partituras -"virguladas"-, únicamente eran consideradas como un plan general con vistas a su "resolución" definitiva en partichelas o voces separadas para la ejecución práctica.
